What We Do

Three areas of practice

Each engagement begins with a careful conversation rather than a ready-made solution. The three services below represent the core of the work at Thornbridge.

Marital property advisory

Advisory on Marital Property Arrangements

A service covering arrangements relating to marital property — whether entered before marriage, during the marriage, or in connection with a subsequent change in circumstances. Drafting proceeds at a deliberate pace, with time for reflection between meetings.

Variation of family arrangements

Variation of Existing Family Arrangements

Work on variations of existing family arrangements — maintenance orders, care schedules, or property arrangements — where circumstances have materially changed and revision has become appropriate. Conducted with the same care as the original drafting.

Why Thornbridge

A considered approach to family law

Family proceedings carry weight that extends beyond the immediate legal question. The manner in which the work is conducted — the pace of correspondence, the quality of preparation, the consistency of updates — matters alongside the outcome itself.

Our Approach in Full

Transparent at every stage

Fees are discussed openly at the outset, and the scope of each engagement is documented before work begins.

Unhurried drafting and review

Documents are not produced in haste. Time between meetings is given for considered reflection before commitments are finalised.

Respectful where positions differ

Even in contested proceedings, the manner of engagement with opposing parties is measured — preserving where possible the relationships that continue after the matter concludes.

Malaysian law, clearly explained

Legal frameworks are explained in plain language, and where specific terms require context, a short plain-language note is provided.

Getting Started

Ready to speak with someone about your situation?

An initial consultation is a conversation, not a commitment. We take time to understand the full picture before offering any direction on how to proceed.

Common Questions

Frequently asked questions

What happens at the first meeting?

The first meeting is an opportunity to describe your situation in your own words. There is no fixed format. We use the time to understand the background, identify the questions that matter most, and discuss whether and how Thornbridge can assist. Nothing is decided at this stage.

How long does the process typically take?

The timeline varies considerably depending on the nature of the matter. Advisory work on marital property arrangements may be completed within a few weeks once documentation is in order. Contested proceedings before the court involve a timetable set in part by the court itself, and may run for several months. We discuss realistic expectations at the outset and provide updates whenever the position changes.

How are fees structured and communicated?

Fees are discussed openly before any engagement commences, and the scope of the work is documented in writing. For advisory engagements, a fixed fee is quoted where possible. For contested proceedings, fees are quoted by reference to the expected scope and updated if the scope changes materially. Disbursements — court fees, filing charges, and the like — are identified separately.

Does Thornbridge handle matters outside Penang?

Our practice is based in George Town, Penang, and we primarily act in proceedings before courts in Penang. For matters requiring representation elsewhere in Malaysia, we are able to discuss the most suitable course of action and, where appropriate, assist in identifying appropriate counsel in the relevant jurisdiction.

How is client information kept confidential?

All information shared in the course of a client engagement is held in strict confidence in accordance with professional obligations under Malaysian law. Matter files are held securely and are not disclosed to any third party without the client's consent, except where required by law or court order.

Can an existing order or arrangement be changed?

In many cases, yes. Where circumstances have materially changed — whether in relation to finances, living arrangements, or the needs of children — there may be grounds to apply for a variation. We begin by reviewing the original order or agreement and assessing whether the changed circumstances are sufficient to support an application, then discuss the most workable path forward.
