The Work We Do
What each engagement involves, how it unfolds in practice, and the points at which clients are asked to make decisions.
Back to HomeMethodology
Each engagement begins with a consultation in which the background is discussed at length. Nothing is assumed. We take time to understand the full picture — the existing arrangements, the change that has prompted the instruction, and the outcomes the client is hoping to achieve.
From there, a written scope is prepared and shared before any substantive work begins. The scope identifies what the engagement covers, what falls outside it, and the basis on which fees are charged. This is reviewed with the client at a second meeting if needed before it is agreed.
Substantive work — whether drafting, correspondence, or preparation for proceedings — is conducted with care. Drafts are shared in advance of meetings rather than at them, so that the client arrives having had time to read and reflect.
A conversation to understand the background and identify the questions that matter most. No obligation attached.
A document setting out the work to be done, what is not included, and the fee basis. Agreed before work begins.
Drafting, correspondence, or preparation for proceedings, with written updates at each material stage.
A written summary of what was done, the outcome, and any matters the client should be aware of going forward.
Service One
This service covers arrangements relating to marital property — whether entered before marriage, during the marriage, or in connection with a subsequent change in circumstances. The work begins with a careful review of the couple's or individual's existing asset position and intended outcomes, followed by a clear explanation of the applicable frameworks under Malaysian law.
Drafting proceeds at a deliberate pace. Documents are not produced in haste and are not presented for signature at the same meeting at which they are first discussed. Time is allowed between meetings for consideration, and further conversation is expected as part of the process.

Typical timeline
Most engagements of this type are completed within three to eight weeks, depending on the complexity of the asset position and the number of revision rounds. The timeline is discussed at the outset and adjusted if circumstances change.
On contested matters
Contested proceedings are not failures. In some matters, the positions of the parties cannot be reconciled through correspondence or mediation, and the appropriate resolution requires the court to make a determination. Thorough preparation and measured representation serve the client well at every stage of that process.
Service Two
Where a matter has not been capable of resolution through correspondence or mediation, Thornbridge provides representation in contested proceedings before the appropriate court. The work is approached with thorough preparation and a considered communication plan, ensuring the client understands the position at every stage.
The manner of representation is measured and respectful, even where opposing positions are firmly held. The client is consulted on all significant tactical and procedural decisions, and regular written updates are provided throughout the proceedings.

Circumstances change, and the arrangements governing family matters should be capable of reflecting those changes. This service covers applications to vary existing maintenance orders, care schedules, or property arrangements where circumstances have materially changed and revision has become appropriate.
The engagement begins with a review of the original arrangement and documentation of the change in circumstances, followed by correspondence or formal application depending on the path most likely to achieve a workable outcome. The process is conducted with the same care as the original drafting.

Typical timeline
Where variation can be achieved by consent and correspondence, matters are often concluded within four to ten weeks. Where a formal application is required, the timeline is influenced by the court's timetable. Both scenarios are discussed and documented at the outset.

Scope, fees, updates, and conclusions are documented in writing across every engagement type. Clients receive a file closure summary on completion.
Expected timelines are discussed at the outset of every engagement. Where the position changes, the client is informed and the updated position is confirmed in writing.
Documents are accompanied by a plain-language summary note. Legal terminology that cannot be avoided is explained in accessible language alongside the document.
Significant decisions are taken only after discussion with the client. The advice role is to inform and recommend, not to decide.
