These are not marketing claims. They are specific commitments that apply to every engagement from the first meeting to the close of the file.
The engagement letter sets out what is included, what is not, and the fee basis. This is provided before any substantive work is undertaken — not after.
Updates are not restricted to billing moments. Written communications are sent whenever the position changes materially, and at agreed intervals even when it has not.
Drafts are provided with sufficient time for the client to read, reflect, and ask questions before anything is finalised. We do not pressurise decisions.
In contested proceedings, all significant tactical and procedural decisions are discussed with the client before they are taken. No positions are adopted unilaterally.
We provide a realistic outlook at each stage, including where the position is uncertain or where the range of outcomes is wide. We do not offer false reassurance.
Invoices correspond to the scope agreed at the outset. Additional work is identified and discussed before it is undertaken, with any revised fee confirmed in writing.
In Depth
The practice at Thornbridge is concentrated in family law. This is not a general firm that accepts family matters alongside commercial or criminal work — the focus is deliberate, and it shows in the depth of knowledge applied to each file.
A note on specialism
A practice focused on one area of law is not a limitation. It means that the practitioners handling a matter have encountered similar questions many times before — and that the work is undertaken by people who have developed a considered view of how Malaysian courts approach the issues that arise.
On the pace of work
Family proceedings involve decisions that will affect circumstances for years. A process that does not allow sufficient time for those decisions to be made carefully is not serving the client well, regardless of how efficiently the documents are produced.
Each matter follows a consistent internal process, from the initial intake through to the close of the file. This structure ensures that nothing is overlooked and that each stage of the work is properly documented.
Communication with clients follows a standard that is not dependent on which practitioner handles the day-to-day work. Updates are written rather than verbal wherever possible, so that the client has a clear record of what has been communicated.
On accessibility
Legal services in Malaysia are not always communicated in a way that is accessible to those without a legal background. We write and speak to clients in plain language, and we follow up verbal discussions with written notes to ensure that nothing is misunderstood.
On pricing
Advisory matters start from RM 1,960, with fees discussed openly at the first meeting. We do not add charges for work that was not within the agreed scope without first discussing the position with the client.
Fees at Thornbridge are discussed before work begins. Where a fixed fee is appropriate, it is quoted and documented. Where the scope is less predictable, the fee basis and likely range are explained at the outset.
We prepare carefully for each stage of a matter, and we are honest with clients about what the work is likely to achieve. Where outcomes depend in part on judicial discretion or the opposing party's response, we explain this clearly rather than suggesting certainty that does not exist.
On expectations
A client who understands the range of possible outcomes at each stage is in a better position to make decisions about the matter than one who has been given an unrealistically positive forecast. Managing expectations is not pessimism — it is the basis of informed participation.

Distinguishing Features
The chambers are located minutes from the courts in George Town. For clients with proceedings in Penang, this is a practical advantage — and it reflects the firm's roots in the local legal community.
Where legal terminology is unavoidable, a short plain-language note accompanies it. This ensures clients can follow the substance of their matter without needing to seek independent clarification of what documents mean.
Even in contested proceedings where positions are firmly held, the manner of engagement with opposing parties is measured. Families continue after proceedings conclude, and the tone of the process contributes to what remains possible.
Applications to vary existing arrangements are not treated as lesser matters. Families change, and the arrangements that govern them need to reflect that. Variation work receives the same attention to documentation and client communication as any other engagement.
